Truly one of the great shooters in history, Dead Space is also a warning shot across the bow of the games industry: be warned, guys. After this, the stakes have risen a lot higher than many studios will be able to go.
Because, simply, this is what we will expect from the finest games going forward. Storytelling by adults (Warren Ellis, anyone?), not hacks armed with cliches. A+ production qualities. Breadth and depth of adventure. Horror that isn't served up in the same old cartoonish way but takes its cues from the problems in our age (to wit: at the root of this horror story are terrors unleashed by religious fanaticism).
I can't think of many games worth celebrating in recent years unless it is this one. I loved the way it drew on its famous predecessors -- Quake, Half-Life in games, Alien in films -- while not slavishly recreating them. Hats off to the team for this work of storytelling art.
