A good disaster flick can be a lot of fun, but I find it impossible to have fun when I'm being hammered over the head with ideological propaganda. Seriously, it's as if Al Gore wrote this screenplay. Not only does the recalcitrant Republican in the White House bear a striking resemblance to a certain Mr. Cheney, but what really takes the cake is the film's closing line. After the impossible disaster has occurred, two astronauts orbiting Earth look down upon the reformed planet, and one of them says to the other, "Have you ever seen the air so clear?"
Yeah. Real nice, guys. Millions of people have died, and half the planet has been rendered uninhabitable, but hey, at least some of that nasty, man-made pollution has cleared up, right? That makes it all worth it.
And, just as an additional insult, we're treated to the sight of hordes of American citizens surging south across the Mexican border in their attempt to escape the new ice age. I suppose the filmmakers thought this was some kind of poetic irony. It wasn't enough for these guys to make a snuff film for Greenpeace. They had to slip in their support for illegal immigration as well.
