Somewhere between a blockbuster and an arcade game

Darksiders is a pretty great take on the classic hack and slash genre, but for me it started to lose identity as game dragged on. The combat and executions that you can perform are really satisfying and fun to watch happen, but they get repetitive and almost in the way of getting through fights as you near the end.
On top of the repetition that the game gets it also loses some of its identity. You actually get an item in the game that is akin to the portal gun from Valve's portal and while it is an interesting mechanic and does make puzzles more difficult it seems kind of a lazy on Vigil's part to have used something that another game has already proved to be a great puzzle platforming tool. It doesn't even differ from its doppleganger in the sense that even the speed increase that some can give you is there to you, the physics isnt transferred over which makes it "different" but seems pointless. The game does get back on track with the last boss and final puzzles as it reintroduces the main storyline again but the bosses and items you needed to find before this final objective seem almost distracting and like a side quest rather than your main goal.
All in all the game wasn't nearly as "bad" as I may have made it seem but there are really some glaring things that take a little work to get beyond. If you don't mind having to muscle through some bad voice acting the game gives you a sense of accomplishment as you move through which I took as a rewarding play experience that was merely the director's cut of the whole movie (which always go on forever) I gave this game an 8 because I found it satisfying, rewarding, and just challenging enough to make me think. Excited for the second one!
