Great Game, could use some more time in the oven.

I think this game was largely under rated by the critics. It was a lot better than Darksiders 1, the combat was enjoyable with the introduction of talent trees. The new weapon and gear system is very well designed and doesn’t feel overwhelming like many others. The dungeons were well put together and interesting. There is over 20 hours of play without doing the side quests. The story was generally engaging. The environments were great, and well executed. I had a great time through the entire game, and was sad to see it end.
However, I do feel there were areas to improve. Some of the weapon procs are game breaking. There was a point in the game where I became so overpowered that combat was no longer enjoyable. I was also hoping for some new concepts in the dungeon crawling genre. Some tougher puzzles, much of the challenge of the game was finding which wall I could run up, instead of how the puzzle at hand worked. I feel a little originality goes a long ways.
In regards to story, a never changing story arc makes the game feel drawn out and padded. Many of the best games in history contained story arcs that changed, sometimes rapidly. Instead of spending 20 hours trying to complete the current task at hand, give us a sudden change and we are no longer concerned with the current objective, but rather flip the story on its ear.
Without giving too much away, Death’s character was too arrogant, and that is fine! However many people do not believe he would show enough compassion toward his brother to make such large sacrifices. It should have been stressed throughout the game that Death’s actions were largely self serving.
Toward the later levels, it felt like the studio was in a time crunch, the locations became less engaging. They should have evened the worlds out, so that we don’t spend 10 hours in one, and 2 hours in others.
With all these points laid out for the franchise to improve upon in the future. I do fully recommend this game.
