Really Bad

Futile

If you enjoy the feeling of failure, and you enjoy the most basic graphic images possible, also a complex and touchy menu system, repetative uninspired combat, an almost worthless map system, and you have hours of time to dedicate to the game, then Dark Spire might be a fun game for you.
I read that this game was supposed to be a throw back to the old school RPGs, many of which were great fun. Well they were fun because we didnt have an alternative. Knowing what RPGs have become its odd that Atlus would make a game which reminds you of the old days but which even in those days you would not want to play.
In my opinion there is nothing worth playing about this game either in 2009 or in 1989 which is when this game might have been considered good.

Fair

Not the best

I've played a lot of dungeon crawlers before, but this one lets the aggravating logistics of reality overwhelm its fun. Death comes frequently, and with no shortcut back to the town outside, you're as likely to have your party wiped out as you are to make money. Repetitive and dull...far from the best I've seen.

This game reminds me of the bard's tale games for the original nintendo. It's even harder to build up your character levels, though. It's also almost impossible for your thieves to disarm traps. It took forever(at least 5 hours) and many deaths but I finally built up my characters to level 3 and I still wasn't able to disarm difficult(which is most of them) traps. I also was unable to explore the 2nd level of the tower without being killed by the first set of monsters I ran into. There are also only 4 places to visit besides the tower. There is the temple of Order/chaos(depends on your characters' charactor), the guild, the inn, and a shop. The dungeon itself might be interesting, if you can actually manage to get far enough into it without dying, but if you don't like working to level your characters don't bother with this game.
