Not many games have the guts to state this on the back of the case, generally the ones who would print something like this might be a let down. Not Dark Souls, when they say prepare to die, it wasn't to be cool or sound tough, they were seriously saying "You are going to die in this game and you're going to die a lot!"
That Aside, Dark Souls is in my personal opinion a gorgeous game, the creators didn't leave any details out of the environment when they were making it. Graphics, however, are not what makes the game so appealing to me either, its the game as a whole. I have never played a game that has had as much depth, lore, and thought put into it as this. Everything and everyone you run into, NPC or in Boss fights, has a background story.
Honestly Dark Souls has a story almost equivalent to an epic, like The Odyssey. But don't get me wrong, the Odysseys plot would be a walk in the park compared to what Dark souls throws at you. Everything, and I am not exaggerating at all, but EVERYTHING in Dark Souls is a challenge, a rage inducing, blood pumping, foul language having, challenge that withers away your determination to the point of utter despair...
However, those of you that have the heart, determination, and self control to stay level headed and push through the utter annihilation you just went through, will rewarded like no other! The sense of pride and happiness you receive from overcoming the obstacles shoved down your throat is like no other.
The GREATEST thing about Dark Souls is that it throws you straight into to the game without any knowledge of what to do, where to go, who to fight, you don't have set objectives, and you're absolutely clueless about what you need to do. All of the answers however are in the game, they're not obvious but the characters will tell you information and nothing is hidden from you. All you have to do is think about it and listen to everything and everyone.
It is a battle against your brain as much as your char
Dark souls really sold me with it's focus on being tough, for the tough. But as many have said they took an extreme to an extreme. This game was hard, yes but after you get adjusted (You never get used to it) you realize that there's no point in playing the game besides saying that you did. There is no story to this game and that's a shame because this game had an immense and beautiful world but like any game a good story is really the only thing that makes a player want to (in this case) hack, slash, bash, run, jump, and of course die until you reach whatever comes next. Now the dieing, let's talk about that everyone knows it in this game basically this is what makes people either love or hate this game. Lets face it players die ALOT in dark souls and I understand that, that is what developers wanted, but there are so many ways that they could have gone through this game without making dieing so frustrating and regaining your souls such a chore. I'll start with the multiplayer, there are other people in this world, that much is obvious. Honestly I like the spirit system leaving either helpful or harmful ghosts behind but at the end of the day AI just doesn't cut it. I know some will disagree with me here but I have to say Darksouls needed a stronger mulitplayer. Instead of one scared tired and not very strong character stumbling and falling and dieing through this world a group of brave adventurers trudge through the grime and filth that makes up dark souls and come out clean at the end. Now players could still leave good souls and tips behind. but say the player and his team (four max or three max) leaves behind their players now you and your team have another team fighting a giant monster. Now on the opposite side say players leave red souls behind now there are ambushes lying in wait. Dark souls could have been so much more if the developers had stopped and occasionally thought "wait maybe this game is a tad to hard and confusing"
Since my membership with gamefly I've been getting xbox 360 games and 9 out of ten games don't work. I just got a replacement copy of dark souls and that one doesn't work either. I'm getting fed up with pouring my money into a service that doesn't check the games for defects. I'm also wondering if not gamfly but microsoft that is deliberately sabotaging xbox 360 games to force people to upgrade to the xbox one. They have the ability to do that via the internet if they really wanted too. Does anybody else suspect that? I think of that mainly for the reason that the gamefly games don't look damaged most of the time however, they don't work. I find it more curious still because I was sent two different copies of the same game.
