This game is a work of art. Everything comes together for a beautiful and entertaining adventure.

The gameplay is much like the original Dark Cloud. Dungeons are randomly generated, and you must collect material to rebuild locales. You weapons grow, evolve, wear and break if you don't pay attention. Weapon growth is easier this time, as there aren't as many characters to level.

In classic Level 5 style, the side quests are where the game shines. You take pictures of everything, and use the photos to attempt new invention ideas. You can catch and breed fish to battle and race. You can play a quirky golf game at the end of any dungeon. You collect townsfolk from across the world to aid you in your quest. It's all a blast, and works almost seamlessly with the game proper (fight the evil genie, or whatever he was).

The game looks great, and the music is a mix of serene and exciting. The voice-over work is spectacular, which is a rare treat.

There is a difficulty scaling issue. Bosses get very difficult, and there's not much to do to raise your character's defense. There are a set number of items (favorite food) to do that, and I personally think it's not enough. It's a minor gripe, but it makes the end game super hard.

Bottom line: this one's a keeper. If you find it, buy it, it's a treasure.

If you like Action RPG's - this is your kind of game, especially if you played Dark Cloud and/or the Zelda series. If you've never played an RPG however, or only played Turn-based RPG's and wanted to test the waters with an Action based RPG, this is the game to get your feet wet with. Level-5 as always does a great job involving us with the storyline (even if some of the dialogue is campy). They keep cut scenes short and dive us head first straight into the action. I would definitely recommend starting with Dark Cloud 1 first but you don't have to. I simply found it a much more enjoyable experience to go in order. If you find you like Dark Cloud 2 and finish it, it might seem awkward going backwards to Dark Cloud 1. There's plenty to fight in each dungeon and each floor, as well as chests with goodies (some though are out to eat you! - mimics) and two give a map and then a stone that lets you see where the beasts are on the map. Upgrade weapons creating better ones and invent new items with pictures taken of objects.

With hours of fun, I myself just started playing it again - each character you come across will have their own weapons that can be improved not to mention clothing can be upgraded too (through invention I believe). Lots of challenges, bring a sharpened mind, not all beasts can be defeated the same way....The graphics look great - I personally loved the cut scenes that ended in mid-action and colored as if it was in an old book. Be prepared for lots of fun I myself was entertained for hours and at the edge of my seat thanks to the music used (especially when the Blackstone One started up -grin-). If you find you enjoy the Dark Cloud series, take a look at Level-5's Action RPG Rogue Galaxy.

Dark cloud is one of those games that at first glance at the box and the first 1/2 hour of game dont seem all that great. But all of this changes the moment you make it through your first dungeon. The game itself is one of the best rpg games i have eveer played. I would put it in my top 3 rpgs' along with ff7. The game has everything. There are many different things to do and not all of them include your weapons or fighting. Extremely enjoyable and i wish it was longer. One of the few games i have bought.
