Let me first say I have never played a previous DMC. Maybe that makes me more impressionable or forgiving, but I noticed that people who played this without prior DMC experience thought the game very good as well. This is also one of the few games in the genre that I've enjoyed.
First off, the game looks very solid. The most helpful review said that the color palette was off and the engine dated, but I honestly thought the game was beautifully crafted. Not Witcher II level good, but pretty darn good. The visuals in the game are very vibrant, and they make for a good show.
The combat system is fluid, to say the least. It's done in such a way that it's not difficult to pick up and look like a baddonkey, but it still may take some time to master. The most helpful comment also said that the lack of lock on was due to the new Ophion whip, but if you play the game you will notice that a lock on feature would be nice, as the whip only works if the camera is in your favor. Other than that the whole Angel-Demon-Rebellion combat works tremendously well.
The soundtrack is great, and introduced me to an all new genre of music. It works in a modern metaltech kind of way, which is very welcome and works for this game completely.
The characters aren't fleshed out all that much, though. Dante isn't an emo d-bag as the old fans might think, though he does acts that way in the very beginning but develops into a better character as the story progresses. I won't spoil the game, but the rest of the characters are less fleshed out i my opinion. Don't like? Use a skin.
The story isn't all that impressive, as some have said it's basically They Live with demons. I honestly haven't seen the movie, but the story works well enough in its own right that I found it interesting to a degree. The level designs are cool and the patforming is surprisingly fun.
In the end it's a blast to play and many difficulty levels and collectibles to be found. I say give it a shot
