Possibly one of the largest cases of judging by the cover in gaming, almost all of the hatred towards series reboot DMC: Devil May Cry has been focused on Dante's remodel both in appearance and demeanor. While it may affect your overall opinion of the game, there is more to this game than the new Dante.
I don't want to dwell on Dante's remodel. DMC essentially traded amusingly corny one liners for an enjoyable and cohesive (if unoriginal) story with a few cringe worthy lines. From what I've heard it's basically modeled after a cult film called 'They Live'. All in all the story made sense and was amusing enough; more importantly, it didn't get in the way. The impressive level design throughout the game's setting of Limbo is noteworthy.
Gameplay is DMC's strongest asset. In DMC Dante can switch between his guns, Rebellion, a fast angel weapon and a slow but powerful demon weapon on the fly using the triggers. He will also have access to angel lift and demon pull to yank Dante towards enemies and vice versa, as well as for some solid platforming sections. Dante moves more fluently in combat as well; only the trickster style from DMC3 comes close. On the other hand, this all comes at a cost to the game's signiture difficulty. The default difficulties are extremely easy for experienced players, however the unlocked difficulties can be quite challenging. The style meter has also been dumbed down a little, only lowering if you're hit, which is easy to avoid thanks to telegraphed enemy attacks. You will still need to vary attacks and combos a lot to get SSS ranks on missions though, even with the simplified meter. Combat can get repetitive due to repeating enemy types. Boss battles are interesting but simple. The game will hold you hand for half a playthrough but after Chapter 11 the game sets you free; DMC is a game that's better the second time around. There are plenty of collectables to find as well.
This reboot is a blast to play and a good genera entry point,
7/10
