Was the release of Conan actually a beta?

I rented Conan because I thought the demo was rent-worthy and I am a Conan fan, mainly the 1970's adapted Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian comic. I am also a fan of underdog games that critics don't like (Dark Sector, Clive Barker's Jericho). The game is basically a button-mashing God of War clone, which is fine, but after playing it for an hour or two I am almost convinced that it is a beta: "Conan was originally scheduled for an early 2008 release, but was brought forward to the second half of 2007 because of THQ's poor performance in that fiscal year" - From Wikipedia. Anyway, although the game has many merits it also has such glaring problems that I have abandoned it on the final boss battle, and I like to finish games. I am a small time game developer and all of my games are flawed in one way or another, usually because I ran out of time, and I suspect that's what happened with Conan. So that's my question, was Conan a beta?

Conan is exactly the type of game you'd expect from just looking at the cover. There is nothing complex about a cro-mag barbarian who has a 2nd grade education. He was born to swing a sword, not entertain you with dialogue trees and fetch quests. Who needs NPCs when you have Conan and his mighty sword skills.

Conan's gameplay and control scheme could be guessed from 10 miles away. X is quick attack, Y is heavy attack, B is grab, and RS evades. A also jumps, if you aren't lost yet. With such simplicity, Conan makes for such a satisfying hack n slash game because it's so unchallenging and linear.

Conan can also wield a single weapon, 2 handed larger & slower weapons, and also dual wield 2 swords. This gives you all types of simple variety in attacks, but it's fun to switch it up at times to keep it challenging. You can purchase new attacks with gained xp. Enemies drop tons of weapons, so you just pick those up and keep hacking away. Conan can block and also throw objects if you feel the desire to press another button besides X.

There are also some very basic platforming elements like climbing ledges, jumping gaps, etc. The puzzles involved could be completed by a 3rd grader. I'm not sure Conan knows his shapes yet, so how crazy can the puzzles possibly be?

I would recommend this for the achievement hunters and fans of easy action adventurers. You can button mash your way through Conan in a few short hours, which makes this the perfect GF rental. There are no other modes or challenges, so once you complete the short campaign, you only need to mop up some achievements by replaying missions again. Get to the choppa!!

to put it very clearly this game was very good look into the badass universe of conan the barbarion, the theif, the destroyer.....to many names to count. i have been aconan fan ever since i was 5 and to say the least robert e howard would have been proud of the game. the story itself is new but ties to the fast land of hyboria.....the only thing bad about this game was the fact that the story itself was not one of robert e howards stories
