IGN Preview of Centipede: Infestation
If you've ever played the old arcade classic Centipede, the idea behind the new Wii and 3DS versions should be apparent. You have one mission: kill as many creepy, crawly things as possible in each of the numerous rounds. But this new version isn't your grandfather's Centipede. In fact, you'll find this new take to be quite different from the arcade game of old.
So far the Wii and 3DS versions of Infestation are exactly the same, differing only in their system-specific control schemes. The Wii version makes use of the Wii remote to allow players to aim and shoot at the bugs onscreen while using the nunchuk to move your character. The 3DS version, on the other hand, has you moving with the circle pad and aiming/shooting with the face buttons (think Smash TV).
The Wii version is clearly better in this regard. Aiming with the Wii remote feels great, while using the 3DS face buttons to aim in only four different directions felt clunky. I adjusted to it relatively quickly, but it's definitely not as intuitive as the Wii control scheme.
After a practice session that introduces you to the game's mechanics, Infestation throws you right into an onslaught of levels to shoot your way through. Watching all of the different bugs crawling or hopping around the bright green levels was a neat way to modernize this old school game, though the visuals weren't exactly stellar. Assets seem to have been shared between the 3DS and Wii versions. As a result they look a lot better on the smaller 3DS screen.
All of this is set between some very silly cut scenes in which the main character, Max, makes a fool of himself in front of a gal named Maisy. Perhaps the story gets better as it goes. Keep in mind, I was playing unfinished versions of these games - but from what I played it wasn't particularly interesting, and definitely could have benefited from better animation.
The main attraction in Infestation comes in the form of the special power-ups you collect as you play. These include flame, ice and laser powers, each of which are acquired by killing bugs and collecting a variety of different coins. These abilities are short-term, but if you hold out until you gather at least two of the same coin you can double their power. This makes killing bugs a snap, and adds some variety to the otherwise repetitive gameplay. On the Wii version using these abilities is relegated to the D-pad, and on the 3DS you use the touch screen. Both are quick and easy to use, though the 3DS is the better set-up since you can easily see which medallions you've collected.
