I have been a die-hard fan of the Castlevania franchise for well over two decades, and have yet to find a Castlevania game I didn't like. This game brings the franchise onto the current consoles with gusto and vengeance. As with other reviews I will first state the negatives, then the positives.
1. The stages are a bit more linnear than what I'm used to, and I'm not buying the dlc content, as I don't think it's rewarding enough. Those are honestly my only complaints. And they're minor.
2. Everything else about this game is a masterpiece. The controls are fluid and solid at the same time. The story of Gabriel Belmont's quest for revenge, justice, deliverance, and ultimately salvation, is intensely compelling, and you strongly feel for the character. The graphics are beautiful, and the boss battles are incredibly epic. The music is also amazingly well-done, and the voice acting is done perfectly. (Patrick Stewart as the narrator? BRILLIANT!)
3. In comparison to other extreme action/platformers like Devil May Cry 4 and God of War 3, I would dare to say Castlevania: Lords of Shadow outshines both. The combat system isn't as varied as the other two, but it doesn't have to be. The game gives us quality over quantity, and substance over flash and fluff. I even find the main character, Gabriel Belmont, to be more likeable than his counterparts (mostly Kratos), and his cast of characters far more compelling.
To me, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a perfect game. I hope that this is the standard that Konami goes with for all future incarnations of the series. I love this game, and will try to re-rent it, in time for Halloween.
