Let's just get it out of the way - Castlevania: LOI is no Symphony of the Night. Having said that, it is a very solid title that plays fairly well in the 3-D realm. Graphically, the game is what one would expect from a Castlevania game: Slick looking characters, a wonderfully detailed castle, and cool looking bosses. You play as a man named Leon who takes on the castle after his betrothed is kidnapped by the owner and after that you lay waste to numerous enemies in route to a final showdown. The whip is the weapon here and it works very well in this game. I was a little surprised at the fluidity of the game being a skeptic of there every being a good Castlevania that was not in 2-D. Leon jumps and attacks with very good precision, although his double-jump whip climb can be frustrating to pull off until you get the hang of it. The game really rewards you for finding the more hidden rooms in the castle for they usually contain either useful items or power ups that really help you progress through the game. It's going to be hard to get through the game without acquiring a good amount of the power-ups for you can't just go kill enemies to level your character up. Because of this lack of leveling up, I think it was nice that the first time you entered a room, you had to clear the enemies to progress, but any time you enter afterwards, you can simply bypass them and go straight to the door, saving valuable time and health. The boss fights, were not as spectacular as in past games, but the were good nonetheless. Overall, Castlevania: LoI is a good and worthy addition to the series.
