This is the first Cabela game I’ve played with a third person perspective. In the main mode (Story), you play as some hunter who has to go from point A to point B while trying to save the day – and a whole bunch of strangers.
Whoever thought of this game may have tried to mimic the Uncharted game franchise – most of the time you will be climbing up and down ledges and making jumps over all sorts of gaps.
Between the jumping exercises, you fight off a few types of animals – mostly packs of wolves - with five types of guns (a flare gun, a pistol, two types of rifles, and a shotgun). But the fights repeat far too often – and I would’ve liked to seen a bigger variety of opponents.
The controls work well – except for the jumping parts (which is too haphazardly done) and the reloading (which is problematic at best). But I had a lot of fun traversing the mostly single path featured in every level.
But the biggest problem with the main mode is that it is too short. The story takes place over eight chapters, and will take most players between two to three hours to finish. And the final boss fight is one of the most underwhelming fights I’ve seen in some time (if you do what the game makers want you to do, the fight is over in less than twenty seconds.)
After the main mode, all you have is the shooting gallery. Here, there are eight on rails shooting levels which you can play for points – or to see how long you can keep the health meter from getting emptied out.
Cabela’s Survival: Shadows of Katmai is a fun game, but it’s too short and lacks too much variety for me to hand out money for. RENT IT.
