C.O.P. The Recruit is a racer/shooter game for the DS. This game is also an open world game witch is rare for the DS.
The Racing: In the huge open world, you are capable of stopping any car moving to take it for yourself. The good thing about this is that you have a good variety of cars to choose from. Each car has its advantages, and others have their disadvantages (such as the garbage truck or RTA bus). For the most part the racing is "OK". There are a few problems though. First, it is very easy to spin out of control when you brake (especially with the Y button). You will also have a hard time NOT hitting things if you want to go fast. When you are chasing a car, most of the time, you have to hit it from the back. It’s a bit hard to hit it from the side because most of the time you wont crash into them, you will just slide out of control and lose them. Also, the chases can be irritating because when you’re chasing your target, many other vehicles are in your way and thus will cause you to lose speed. As a result, it takes a bit of practice to drive in this game.
The Shooting: As you progress in the story, you will gain multiple weapons. This gives you more options to get rid of your enemies. You move your gun using the touch screen, but you mostly just slide in the direction you want multiple times. I also recommend shooting with the trigger button instead of the double tap feature. This is a control setup to get use to. The "Shootings" can be fun sometimes. One problem though is that you can’t really tell if you’re hitting your enemy or not. You just have to keep shooting at them until they go away. Also, surprisingly, you can’t just "run-and-gun". At many times there will be multiple enemies that move around and gang up on you. Fortunately, you regenerate health over time, so patience is KEY.
C.O.P. The Recruit is an enjoyable game if you are willing to cope with its few driving flaws and unique shooting style. I highly recommend it as a rent.
