If you have never played a single game in this series, this is the game for you if you wish to start. The speed factor and frenzied pace alone will keep you glued to the screen for hours. This [game] is also a step above the others in the series with a large graphical boost and better damage rendering. After the eye candy is sorted out and waded through, the really good part of the game shines through, that is the crashes. The sheer amount of particle effects between the different collisions might just make your eyes bleed. And as with the others in the series, you can expect a plethora of different exciting game modes as well as online play to siphon even more hours of your life away. On the down side, with all of the nice speed and effects, you can expect a couple of framerate hiccups and slowdowns, but not enough to choke the gameplay. Unfortunately the one player mode may seem a little flat to the veterans of the series.
Down to brass tacks, the game looks beautiful and the controls are solid. Criterion strikes up a nice balance of freshness and reuse of good concepts to keep the series from getting stale. The game will chug when the action gets thick, but it will still be enjoyable. Online modes and multiplayer get your friends into the action as well, adding the Z plane to the 2D one player experience. The vehicle selection is large and interesting, and the EA Trax music selection has enough music for everyone. This game may be the most overlooked underdog racer of the year, but it is definately worth playing.
