A Great Way To Start 2014 For Fans of The RPG.

I'd liken this experience to Ni No Kuni in 2013 (if you've not played that title, I'd highly recommend it) - simply magical. Bravely Default is the spiritual successor to one of the Final Fantasy spinoffs and outshines it in every way. The strange name is explained in the combat system: default to block and gain a battle point, or brave to use battle points, attacking multiple times in a turn. It takes some getting used to but provides for some fantastic combinations and white-knuckle battles that come down to the very last hit point.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, the job system is back! There are multiple jobs available for your party members to learn including Ninja, Knight, Bard, various mages, and even more to be unlocked as you progress. Each carries with it unique skills that may be mixed and matched with skills from other jobs a character has progressed in - the combinations make an old trick fresh and fun.

The story for Bravely Default isn't anything mind blowing, but is adequate enough to be overlooked due to the other merits of this wonderful game. It is a beautiful game, for 3DS or otherwise. The graphics are both new and familiar, able to retain the 16-bit glory days but in 3-D. You won't get tired of exploring the world - but if you do, you can actually modify the rate of random encounters in the options menu which is a nice touch.

Underneath the main story lies what would have passed for a standalone title years ago. Your main goal in the secondary story is to rebuild a town, allocating resources as you see fit. The kicker is that as you build up the town, new weapons, armor, and items become available at vendors around the main world.

I don't think Bravely Default will be the game to change the mind of someone who is adamantly opposed to RPG's (which is unfortunate, but I understand the complaints), but for the rest of us, it is a fantastic way to start the new year and will remain in my 3DS for months to come.

I picked this up thinking it was going to be like most other RPGs and that I would lose interest due to the complicated fighting styles and item/equipment details. I couldn't be further from the truth. The initial gameplay was fun, it was very informative and allowed me to start off easily and adjust the difficulty later on. The brave and default commands add a sort of incentive to utilize them, I normally default and then use brave to decimate my enemies. All in all, I believe the replay value will retain as well as offering a wide array of enemies/spells/items/equipment/locations/etc etc. I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys RPGs as well as people who don't.
