Quantum of Solace is NOT Goldeneye for the N64! But as a 3rd Person Shooter, it is excellent. The story is typical James Bond, use gadets, shoot guns, stop bad guys. I loved this game! The story FEELS like a real Bond movie, and I haven't had this much fun with a 3rd person shooter since Syphon Filter 1&2 on the original PSX. The levels are varied, the story moves along at a good pace, and so does the action. There is a good balance of run-and-gun shooting, stealth, and mini-games, such as hacking into keypads or timed button-presses when fighting hand-to-hand with an enemy, and the score and sound effects add to the movie-style presentation. It all blends nicely. You can hide behind walls and objects, crouch, roll to cover, shoot from behind cover, shoot blindly from cover, walk crouched for stealth, jump over or climb along certain objects and beams, knock-out sentries, and aim more accurately with a zoomed perspective that's perfect for headshots. But enemy AI is smart and likes to flank your position, so be careful. There are pistols, including silenced ones for stealth, machine-guns, and sniper rifles all with varied power, and ammo is abundant. Then there are the "Bond" moments, like shooting fire extinguishers or chandeliers to take-out enemies or cause a distraction. It's a nice touch. The shooting itself can be a lot of fun, but the targeting has a flaw that keeps it from perfection. When the action gets overwhelming, it can be hard to turn and find enemies quickly before they begin to light you up, especially if you accidentally click the zoomed targeting view. The roll to cover will be your best friend at moments like this, keeping you from dying until you readjust. The great thing is that there are plenty of checkpoints to save the game, and the modern system of avoiding action for a few seconds to regain health is used. Rolling-to-cover a few times will work for that. But don't let that keep you from trying Quantum of Solace. It is a lot of fun!
