Electronic Arts, normally known for its sports games, has kind of stepped out of that genre with this game. "Black", though, differentiates itself from other first-person shooters in that there is more emphasis on the weaponry that is available than on the actual central storyline behind the game.
To be honest, I tried to keep up with the story that was being presented before each level began, but I just couldn't follow what was supposed to be going on. It seemed as though the central plot kept jumping around and didn't have any cohesiveness whatsoever. "Black" reminded me of "SOCOM" meets "State of Emergency" in that there is alot of stealth and and tactical movements involved, but, in the end, you are just supposed to shoot everything that moves while arming yourself with bigger and bigger weaponry. While this is a novel idea for the first level, it begins to become repetitive by the third or fourth level.
One area where this game truly shined was in the attention to detail given to it by its developers. Every little detail was given attention. From the grass to the enemy to the weapons themselves, it is clearly evident that this game had a lot of time and energy invested into it.
As other reviewers have stated, the game itself can get a little repetitive at times, and the levels do seem to drag on with no direction. After awhile, you completely forget that there is a reason why you are supposed to be unleashing mass violence.
Another drawback to the game is that if you are in the middle of level and you decide that you want to stop playing, don't turn the console off!!! You will lose whatever checkpoint you were at in that level, and you will be forced to start that whole entire level again from scratch.
Overall, if you like big guns and first-person shooters, this is your game. If you are looking for interesting storylines, though, I would choose another game, as this game comes up short in this area.
A good first attempt from EA!!!!
