It's not bad, but it's not good either. In the end, Battleship commits no real sins but is just an utterly forgettable lackluster foray into the genre.
It really feels like little effort was put into any kind of innovation - there are three varieties of alien enemies, plus one automated mobile mine; there are two alien weapons, and three human weapons.
Heavy weapons take the form of supporting fire from naval vessels. You need to move them into supporting fire positions, then you can call down artillery strikes. These strikes recharge over time, and with only a few exceptions, there is little reason other than impatience to not wait until your artillery recharges before moving on to the next engagement.
The artillery strikes themselves are also pretty mundane, choosing between medium area, 2- or 3-shot small area, huge area, or an "enemy magnet" attack that attracts and distracts nearby enemies.
Headshots cause enemies to drop "wildcards," upgrades for your fleet vessels. They are plentiful, and again, rather mundane, amounting to armor or weapon boosts, as well as resurrecting sunken ships.
The one unique feature of the game - controlling the naval fleet to provide supporting fire - is also quite underwhelming, consisting mostly of moving ships on a grid into highlighted squares and occasionally starting in an on-rails shootout with an enemy ship, which consists entirely of mashing the triggers for 20 seconds.
On level has you protecting a particular ship from enemies, which actually led to the game's only real crisis point - You need to get wildcards to boost your fleet, so it drives you to keep moving, seeking wildcards, and keeping an eye on your fleet.
The game is also very lenient. The "hard" difficulty is akin to a moderate difficulty in Halo or MoH/CoD, and all achievements are easily attainable within 6-8 hours.
In the end, Battleship is like cheap pizza. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special either.
