After his parents are murdered before his eyes, young Bruce Wayne grows up an orphan, inheriting his well-meaning father's vast empire and seemingly endless fortune. Wayne's home, Gotham City, is dominated by crime and corruption. Disgusted by these misdeeds and seized with an unshakable desire to avenge the death of his parents, Wayne takes matters into his own hands, developing a secret identity, one designed to strike fear into the hearts of men, and begins stalking the streets at night as Batman. He comes up against Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson), a one-time goon for a Gotham crime boss, who, after becoming disfigured (and a little insane) thanks to a chemical accident, has taken control of Gotham's underworld.
