Good game, bad business practices.

I rented the game from Gamefly, but apparently that's not enough. If you aren't the "first purchaser" of the game, you don't get to play as Catwoman, who apparently is a big enough part of the game to be worth $10, which we can only assume translates into being 1/6 of the game if you bought it at $60.

That being said, I have to give this game a bad review. It's shoddy business and doesn't deserve my respect. Not to mention, the game never wants you to forget how to play it. It constantly throws "Press B!" indicators all over the place, so it's like the game is trying to hold your hand the whole time, which is terribly annoying.

The gameplay and story itself was fine, but unfortunately it seems this gem was a bit cloudy.

Great game hands down, without a doubt one of the best games i have played. The game play is so fluent and and easy to pick up. huge environment with amazing side missions and allot of great Batman comic villains to go against. Using the old villains as well as the newest ones. great main story plot full of anticipation and thrill. the challenges are tough but not so hard you wana tare your hair out. amazing graphics , the developers did a great job of showing some of the battle scares and damages in Batman's costume through out the game. Smooth movement map great transportation and great use of hi gadgets. Being a huge Batman fan i love the bios and the concept art on the characters. Batman: Arkham City is a definite keeper for sure with the constant add-ons i cant wait for the next title.

One of the best licensed games ever

The first Arkham game blew me away. I spent hours and hours playing it to find all the riddler trophies. It's so good it keeps you playing and having a want for more. Arkham City did what Asylum did and made it even better. The story is very good and has a lot of surprises. There are plenty of cameos from batman's rouge gallery all around Arkham city waiting for you. It's nice seeing all these little things. You can stop to look around and you'll always find something interesting. The freeflow combat is much better this time around. You can take down and counter multiple enemies. Pick this one up now!

Inexplicable Allure

I really enjoyed this game but when I sit down and try to think about what exactly it is that I like about it, I have a hard time coming up with an answer. I can name off plenty of good things about the game but I cannot explain its irresistible allure.

Controls are pretty good, with some annoying bits when using the glide with dive bombs, etc.

Combat system is tight, flashy, and excellent again.

Overworld is alright. I didn't like the largeness of it. Sometimes I'd dread having to travel all the way across the city to get to some point.

Main antagonists are pretty interesting. The thugs, as they often are, are bland and uninteresting. But this is alright since they're essentially fist fodder.

Normally these elements by themselves don't do it enough for me. But, like I said, there was a certain elements that made this much more fun than reflection suggests.

Most of us have suffered from a bad experience of either a superhero video game gone wrong or one of those sad, sad adaptations for movie to game. But this Batman series is nothing like that and am I delighted to say that. First off the story is just a win for any Batman fan and you will even run into the more obscure of villains in the sidemissions of this game. This game expands upon the success of Arkham Asylum and gives you a larger area of play with new and more fluid combat moves. As I am writing this review I am having a hard time of thinking of any flaws because whether it be the graphics, story, combat controls, and enemies each one is above and beyond almost anything you can find in the other games today. To sum it up the only reason I honestly have this game a 9 and not a perfect 10 is because I have a personal belief and reservation that a game in this day and age needs a multiplayer function to get a perfect 10. But with that said this is an excellent game that will make any Batman enthusiast squeal for joy!

Become the legendary Batman!

When I completed arkham asylum I was so astounded by it that I wanted a sequel and what do you know we got one! I have never felt more at home playing as a superhero in my life. Rocksteady went all out with it's sequel and I was eager to greet the villains I grew up with as a kid and beat them back into submission. Batman returns with a greater arsenal of gadgets including a ice maker. I could not believe how useful the gadgets became when you were given so many baddies to pound on.
Arkham city by far is THE best superhero game in my life and believe me I've played a bunch looking for the right blend of story, gameplay, and graphics. The future of gaming is here when you see superhero games getting game of the year! I have never experienced such a dark and yet addicting tale of the Batman. If all the movies were this good I would cry lol not really though. I was never a major comic fan but I believed you could learn a lot from the heroes of DC. I learned from Batman that violence should only be used in extreme situations but never to kill. Batman though struggling with the darkness inside him must save Gotham villains from each other in the biggest and most awesome DC game ever made. Crime doesn't pay and in Arkham city all you'll do is invite your friendly neighborhood Batman to thwart your nefarious plots.
Rocksteady made another ground breaker and with it one of the most life like experiences in hero history.

Bigger but not necessarily better

posted by CrkdWookie (MINNEAPOLIS, MN) Dec 31, 2012

I'll keep this one short, because I'm sure everyone else has said it better already. Arkham City is a terrific game. Definitely worth playing and a lot of fun for comic fans.

That said, while the game is certainly bigger in scope than Arkham Asylum, I don't know if I can say it's better. It's not necessarily worse, but it's definitely not as new and original as AA was at the time, so it feels a bit like more of the same. Good but not surprising. The large open city is nice, but at the same time it loses some of the narrower focus that I think is part of what made AA so great.

All in all a terrific sequel that fans of Asylum should get a lot of enjoyment out of. But I think it's smart they're changing direction with #3 a bit, because I think the formula would have quickly started to stale a bit after this. A definite A- for me however.

On The Fence

1 out of 2 gamers (50%) found this review helpful

Let me start off by saying that I loved Batman: AA. Handsdown the best batman game I ever played. The second installment just didn't do anything for me. I know it's a polished game, but there just wasn't any enjoyment in it for me.

The thing I liked about AC was the movement around the city (sitting on gargoyles on the roofs was cool). I also like the addition of some of Batman's weapons and a few extra villians.

What I didn't like was the repetitive riddler side missions. Want to get 100%? Then be prepared to do a lot of "busy work". To me, this isn't fun and is just content filler. I also didn't like that they brought back a lot of the same villians. It felt like I was just playing AA again in a different setting. The plot was really unrealistic and stupid, but it's Batman so whatever.

I also would have like to play as additional characters or get an extra costumes without having to be squeezed of every penny I have. Making at least one character or costume available freely would have been a nice reward for beating the game... but no you have to pay for every little extra thing. I didn't buy the extras even though I would have liked to see what happened.

Overall it is a good game and I hate to knock it... but it just really wasn't fun for me. I'm sure big Batman fans will just eat it up, but I'm moving onto something else.

May need Players Guide with this one.

I had played both batman games, and Arkham City wins hands down. Unlike Asylum, you might need the Arkham city players guide, which you can pick up at walmart for 20 dollars, or if Gamefly sells it here, u would probably get a better deal. Trust me the book will be worth it. If you are into gamer Scores and such then you will need this book. On another note, this game is one of the best Comic book games of all time. Graphics are much more cleaner than most marvel games, and the gameplay I feel is much nicer. So in other words, "Spiderman eat your heart out."lol

Short Game Play

The game was good in concept, and in storyline. However the game play time for an advanced gamer is quite short on normal difficulty, and the difference between normal and hard is quite extensive. Good title for a short amount of play. But if you buy it may collect dust after a short while.

To anyone who grew up on the comic, cartoon, or movies of Batman this game will not disappoint. All the old bad guys return in this visual marvel of a game. The game moves very fluidly. The story line is well thought of and the game itself is a wide open world waiting just waiting to be discovered There are plenty of side missions even after the game is completed. I would recommend this batman installment to anyone. By the way, my seven year old son loved playing this game too.

To start off Batman Arkham City is amazing. This is a rare thing to feel like your batman unless your dressing up like him. You will punch and kick your way through this well desingned world. But thats also where Arkham City falls because it is such an open world There is some texture pop in. But those are only minor hiccups. Also the villian set up is pretty good. And that's why i gave it a......9

This game is the perfect sequel in every way. enhanced combat, more gadgets, great story, oh and an open world that is amazing. This game has it all. The only thing keeping it from a ten is it can be short if you don't do all the side quests. But overall great game. If you liked the first one this is a must have.

I expected Arkham City to be head and shoulders better than Arkham Asylum but there were differences that made them about even in my mind. The main story line in City was not nearly as impressive as I thought it would be, pretty one dimensional and short. The extra gadgets and abilities are really cool, but the side quests and challenge maps really don't make up for the lack of a long main story. 400 riddler trophies is a little excessive in my mind. I liked it about as much as Asylum.
