I played the first game and enjoyed it, but always wanted an open world with Batman. This game has it. this game is not only as good as the first game, it is better. The graffics are improved, the story is rich with tons of side quests, and even after beating the game I am still only at 40% complete.
Batman has so many gadgets in this game. It also adds more content and story/back story. You get to play as Batman AND Catwoman. There is also DLC coming out for NightWing (Richard Greyson [gamefly doesnt let you say his name because it can mean something else]) and Robin (Tim Drake). The bonus challege maps are in this game like the first (Fighting and Predator Modes), but playable with other character.
At nearly anytime you can stop progressing in the game and just fly around, dropping upon groups of Prisoners, unleashing the fury of the Dark Knight and then vanish. While playing this game you will find yourself saying things like "I'm Batman."
This game will be enjoyable no matter how much time you put into it. You could run through and do the main story or take your time exploring, fighting, doing Riddler Puzzles (There are 440 of them for Batman and Catwoman). Also the waypoint system in this game is amazing. The marked area has a Bat-Signal above it with arrows pointing to the location you desire, and with Batman's Glide and Grapple Boost Glide you can travel from one end to the other in no time. There are also many optional side quests, challenges, unlocks, etc...
The only thing I found that I did not like was the last few AR training optional side missions. By the end the game wants you to be very dead on with your gliding. But I did beat it and unlocked many things, like the Glide Boost.
I would say that this game is one of the top 3 of the year.
