"Backyard Baseball": not as good as the real thing

Backyard Baseball is a simplified baseball game. You can play a home run mini game with more than one player, a pick up game, play a tournament, or make a team and play a season against the AI. The pitching and batting mechanics are easy to understand: if you're pitching, you select your pitch, use the thumbstick to mark where you want the pitch to go (high, low, inside, outside) and wiggle the Wiimote to make a pitch. If you're batting, you select either Power, Contact or Bunt and wait for the opposing pitcher to throw you the ball. You flick the Wiimote to swing the bat (or don't do anything to let the ball pass without hitting it.) Power Pitches and Bats adds a nice spice and some strategy to the game. Fielding is where the problems start showing up. If your opponents get a hit, the AI will select you a player on the field, and you use the Thumbstick to move the player to the ball. After your player picks it up, you select which base to throw it to. Problem is, sometimes the AI selects the fielder not closest to the ball, and the opposing team gets an easy hit - even when you do use the B button to select the nearest fielder. Another problem is base running. For some strange reason, your runners have a tendency to go from second to third - even when the third baseman has the ball in his glove. Why? The music is annoyingly repetitive as the comments made by Jack Fowler, the color commentator. He needs new material. And the graphics also need an overhaul; the fields are bland looking and several of the girls look like they're growing beards. Backyard Baseball '09 isn't a home run, but it's not a strikeout, either.

I guess I was hoping for the mechanics like Wii Sports baseball, but with cuter, more fun characters. There was almost no "physicality" to the game, just a flick here and a flick there. Controlling pitch location was counter-intuitive and difficult to even begin to do properly.
