A Good concept but bad execution

Avalon Code for the DS has a lot of good things going for it, but it falls short in the areas where it counts. For starters the game's system of scanning items, monsters and people is a great idea especially coupled with the gimmick that you can switch the codes of the scans around to create weaker monsters or even stronger items. By combining different codes you can create new weapons and items and even alter people. This makes scanning new items a fun experience but it quickly becomes a chore when you find that you are scanning anything and everything. This is where the game starts to fall short.

Combat and scanning are cool ideas but start to become a chore as you need to scan everything to be able to do things later. Miss something and you will find yourself at a disadvantage later. Also the game doesn't tell you specifically what codes do what when combined with each other so figuring out what is right for what can get frustrating. You also can only hold 4 codes at once which means you might have to drop some in a different character to have enough room for what you need and considering how many things you end up scanning it can get tedious flipping through the pages looking for the right codes.

Overall the game is fun for awhile but the tedious scanning and the slow pace of combat bring it down hard.

The DS has the best and most RPG's on the market today. This game though is just average.

I enjoyed this game in the beginning but about 7 hours into the game it just got repetitive and a little annoying. Most RPG's get repetitive but the story and mystery of the game makes you want to play, and this game story made me want to play more, until the game got annoying. And that happens when you get this new move which happens to be the same button as your search button. And this became annoying as you are searching for more xp to add to the book, and all you hear is "Uh" "Uh" for every failed attempt. If you have to turn the music down because of this is just gets annoying.

Anyway I suggest if you like RPG's give it a try

First off: I played this game for a few hours only, so take this with a grain of salt.

Graphics: Mediocre. The DS isn't capable of much, but it can do better.

Sound: nothing to speak of.

Game Play: This game does not explain itself well. You have two swords, and a bunch of "codes" in blocky shapes that can graft to equipment, enemies, and people. An amusing idea, but poorly executed by a shoddy inventory in the form of a book that constantly requires flipping through to make any sense of it. There are special attacks that don't get explained, and the whole thing was too tedious to continue with.

If you're a die-hard RPG fan looking for a new mechanic, this will provide some interest. If you like your games to make sense right away, I'd steer clear.
