Bad

Good Crafting System But Bad Game

The crafting system is unique and well done and the battle system is just barely passable as ok. However the dialogue and story are so utterly generic and uninteresting it ruins the whole game. I've played plenty of JRPGs and I know they all suffer from this issue to some extent but this one is truly horrible. There's also game design flaws that prevent you from completing a few of the side missions. Even if you are a JRPG fan I'd skip this one.

Complicated for a first timer

The game is a jrpg with a turn based form of combat. The combat does involve timing elements and prompts to block and attack which keep you alert during combat. The game suffers from a non interesting story. Early on you will find yourself skipping through much dialogue. interesting. Paired with the fact that only select important scenes are accompanied by audio, you will spend alot of time reading. It's alot of reading invovled for a story that seems more like a big set of side missions than an actual story.

The game offers very little in detail and exploration. You explore different lands but I use the word explore very loosely. There is little to no interaction except fighting enemies and breaking the same barrels placed on every map. There is a jump button that gets used maybe 10x throughout the game. The combat is fun because it allows for strategy from , who is in your front line vs back, whose special meter you choose to build up, and each character having their own positives and negatives for combat.

The problem with combat is not enough enemy types. By the third area you visit you have seen every enemy available. You will now just see same enemy with a color swap , new name , and renamed abilities. The "Boss" fights are limited in number and due to the option of being able to choose harder opponents when exploring after completing enough actions, you can actually fight bosses earlier than intended. So boss fights themselves become repeated battles.

The game shining grace is its craft system. You pillage and plunder items and relics and combine them into useful items and weapons. How you combine and extract properties from the synthesis process can determine how weak or strong your item will become. Problem is this isnt explain well. The process is very convoluted. It seems like too much is being done and I suspect only veterans of this series truly graps the concepts and what is required. Despite all this the game has its moments, but gets old q

Another Atelier Game

If you've ever played any of the Atelier games on the PS3, this latest one follows the same basic premise as all the other ones. You have a set amount of time to complete the main assignment with opportunities to complete sub-quests before the end of the period.

You do get to choose your starting character and the new "tree" assignment system was different. If you like the other Atelier games, this one is worth a play through at least once.
