These games bring back memories, lots of great memories. Every since the original Game boy I have always gone back and found whatever cartridge/disk that was available that brings these classics back to life. This collection is a fantastic rendition of these games.
There are a few games in this collection that I didn't drop quarters in, but now I can mess with those for free. The Asteroids, Tempest, Centipede, Breakout and Battlezone games are spot on. It is a bit awkward turning the system on its ear (portrait rather than landscape) to play Centipede/Millipede, but honestly that formatting choice feels right. Missile Command probably suffers the most from the controls, but I was never very good at that game anyway, so it is hard for me to judge.
Granted these PSP versions don't have the specialized controls that the big arcade machines did, but lets face it no handheld version of these games ever has! I feel strongly that this is a very fair trade. I think I have actually been playing the handheld versions of these classics longer than the real thing and the control compromise isn't an issue in my book. I want to play them on my handheld regardless of the controls and this allows me to do it! Thanks Atari!
The only item that has kept me from giving this disk a rating of ten (10 in my view is reserved for those games that have nothing major to improve.) is the issue of unlocking the console games. I agree with the other reviewers that the achievement unlocks should have been setup with a staggered implementation. As it is you have to unlock all 44 achievements or you get nada. LOL I am not good at more than one of these games which may keep me from enjoying the older Atari console games which is a shame. But being able to enjoy the best Asteroids port I have ever owned is more than worth it.
If you ever plunked quarters into any of these ancient gems as I once did then rent/buy this game you won't be disappointed.
This game way be alright on other game consoles but as for the PSP it is a waste of time. You actually have to turn the PSP vertically to play some of the games which makes it impossible to play cause it makes hitting the buttons impossible
