Despite the return of the familiar and excellent freerun system, AC3 felt too much like the same old game in another environment. Unlike previous entries in the series, I felt no desire to want to complete the side missions or to bulk up my character's homestead (and would rather prefer the old RPG elements). I stayed true to the maiin mission almost entirely throughout the game and was pretty bored by the end of it. The environment was about as good as I've seen and while there were too many, the cut-scenes were also very well done. It should also be noted, however, that it there were an enormous amount of glitches encountered and really lazy enemy AI. Assassin's Creed is a great series but enough is enough, the franchise should be put to bed.
I can hardly believe it but I actively loathe a game from my favorite franchise of this console generation. After the cash-in that was Revelations this is the first time I've rented an Assassin's Creed game before buying and I'm glad I did. The combat is tedious and unfun. The mission design is the most uninspired it's been since the first game. The setting seems completely wasted on a story and characters that aren't worth caring about. Connor's aspergers syndrome personality makes the crew back in the real world seem even more cartoony than before. The framerate dips to unplayable levels often. The world and assets range from incredible beauty to Playstation 2 era chunkiness often in the same frame. The entire package seems to be a step back.
