I'll get straight to the point.
Good points: The world the game creates is ridiculously immense and beautiful. There's a heck of a lot to do, and a lot of it very interesting, which in itself is what sets the game apart from others. Tying the story with the American Revolution also works very well, and in general, the story is handled superbly. The characters are developed, the graphics are great, animations are smooth. The game can be difficult to achieve perfection synchronization, but you feel like a true master in the end for it. Also, Desmond's overarching story is handled very well this time, actually investing you in his struggle.
Bad points: First off, this game was released too early, as the amount of glitches present is astonishing. No this is not just my copy. Many others also remark on the same thing, and you'll find that you sometimes have to look up things on the internet to find, say, a certain contact not on the map, or etc. Had this game been developed under a company not as large or important as Ubisoft, it would have been destroyed by reviewers, which speaks for it's technical flaws. 2 more weeks to fix these issues, and it would have been perfect. Hopefully a "Game of the Year" edition will fix all these mistakes. Second, the ending is very underwhelming. Connor's ending manages to work well, but still, it has its moments of "...seriously?". Desmond's ending is what I'm specifically talking about. It doesn't feel worth the 5 game (including AC3) build up. And that honestly is quite sad.
Also, if you didn't understand the character names or terminolgy of the series, i would suggest starting back at the original Assassin's Creed and working your way forward. This series is worth playing. This game is fantastic, and I would definitely recommend it. But be wary. It had the potential for the best game I've ever played, but was brought down to just one of the best.
