I really wanted to like this game. I'm a huge Aliens fan, and was excitedly looking forward to this game despite the negative reviews.
I don't have any problem with the textures, the models, the animations, or any of the other "technical" issues that have been bandied about by reviewers.
My problem is with gameplay. Playing on Normal, I've found the game to swing wildly between very easy and savagely unforgiving. Around midway through the game, a Boss encounter occurs that I found simply impossible to accomplish - ON THE NORMAL DIFFICULTY. I had to restart the level on the "easy" difficulty, and then proceeded to defeat the boss in one try.
Additionally, there is no aim assist on most weapons. (The smartgun has an auto aim function but its use in campaign is limited at best.) With the fast-moving hordes of xenos running about, split-second accuracy is a must, and I simply do not have the hand-eye coordination to manage rapid aiming, and thus many times I had to default to the shotguns or spray-and-pray tactics. Auto-Aim is a simple modern FPS feature that absolutely should have been included.
I intend to push through to the end to see the story out, and try out the multiplayer to see if playing as the Xeno is any better than previous attempts. There's a game here, but its buried under layers of bad decisions and cut corners. In the end, it's just a tragedy.
