So let me start by saying that while I gave it a "5" I gave it based off whether or not you are a fan of the Alien franchise. As a fan, I can easily give it a "6.5". However, thinking as someone who's never seen an Alien movie, I'd have to rate it in the "4" area. So lets break it down...
So let's start with some good. For a fan of the series there's one thing thats always appreciated...and that's more Alien. As the game is endorsed by Fox everything in the game is considered cannon and therefore, an extension of the movies. And the story is pretty good too. Good enough that even a non-fan can appreciate it. Do I think it was good enough to span an entire game? Eh, not really. It could have been flushed out a little more. but hey. Good is good.
Game play I actually felt was very solid in terms of responsiveness. I didn't like that the interaction button and the reload button were one and the same as it can get a little frustrating when you've got Xenos on your tail. Also, the AI is a little weak in the human department. The Xeno AI is decent, they have use of walls and vents for movement which keeps you on your toes a bit. They are also very hard to see sometimes which I think is just fine and fits right in. A non fan may find that frustrating however.
Right off the bat, at the start screen, my first though was "Wow...what is this a PS2 game?" Now it wasn't as bad as all that. But the lower quality was surprising at this point in the PS3s development. Now don't get me wrong, the game has some wonderful visual moments. Unfortunately it just wasn't consistent.
To end on a positive, the games score and SFX were stellar. Fans will rejoice at the perfect reproduction of the pulse rifle, motion tracer, et al. And the score really is movie quality. So effective were these factors that it honestly raised my score a whole point.
That's all I got! Hope it helped! Remember, they mostly come at night
