In 2012, doomsday finally arrives. According the Mayan calendar, the world is destined to end in 2012. When a series of small earthquakes shake the earth, it appears the prophecy is coming true and the survival of the human race is in doubt. The President (Danny Glover), at the urging of scientist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor), secretly orders the building of arks designed to take select groups of citizens to safety. While on a vacation with his kids in Yellowstone National Park, writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) discovers what's going on. Curtis and his loved ones make a desperate attempt to reach safety while volcanoes rain fire and entire cities fall into the sea as the world comes crashing down around them.
