Based on the memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup, 12 Years a Slave is a remarkable true story about life as a slave in the antebellum South. Solomon Northup is a free man. He makes a living as a violinist, with a wife and two children living comfortably in Saratoga, New York. His life is soon upended, however, when he is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South. So begins Northup's harrowing journey to regain his freedom and reunite with his family. A journey that takes him from plantation to plantation, full of horrific cruelty that he and his fellow slaves must endure as they struggle to survive.
