X-Com UFO Defense

As the surpreme X-Com commander it is the players resposibility to stop an alien invasion of planet Earth by recovering and researching the alien's technology in order to turn the enemy's own weapons against them. Players build bases all across the globe, command soldiers on UFO raids and various other missions, and assign scientists and engineers to reverse engineer the captured alien technology. The graphics are as good as can be expected from such an old game. The game is not for those looking to get right into shooting aliens as the player spends a great deal of time with the logistics of repelling the alien invasion.

When it comes to turn-based strategy games X-Com is about as good as it gets but if you're looking for an easy, relaxing game this isn't it; the game is entertianing but it's intense.

Just play the game. It is amazing! Still the best X-COM in my opinion. As hard as they tried with the new version this simply cannot be topped. I've played through the game several times over the years, and I still get the chills going after downed U.F.O's at night. GREAT GAME! You will not be disappointed.

No body can deny. Almost 20 years later and it can still draw attention. If you havent played this classic, dont hesitate.
With the remake just a few months away, now is a good time to get hooked on the franchise.

I love this game. This is the only game I have ever rated as a 10. When this game was made it was certainly the best game ever created.

X-Com : 19 years old and still too ADDICTIVE!

This game is fantastic and Gamefly has done a wonderful job making it painless to intstall and launch in Windows. Furthermore, ALL of the old manuals are available within the directory as PDF files, not just some of them. Thanks Gamefly!

I'm sure there are many people that have no problems with the game's difficulty, but I find it to be extremely challenging at first. Primarily due to how unforgiving the game is and the penalties for player mistakes or even poor luck.

For the builder portion of the game: Facilities, staffing, resource managment, build orders, research and production balancing, along with defending countries for financial suppoprt are all paramount. Many details at first, but with experience it all becomes managable. All in all, it is quite engrossing.

Airspace battles are quite gripping considering there isn't even a flight-sim! The first element is detection; by combining radar outposts (until full bases can be built) along with patrolling aircraft, the aliens get discovered. But, keep an eye on those resources such as, fuel, damage, and weapons. Next, hopefully, an aircraft is capable of forcing the UFO to land, not destroy it, or let it escape, since that eliminates all rewards... quite thrilling indeed when attempting to crash a large sized UFO with the combined effort of two basic Interceptors and dual Avalanche Missile Launchers! Ah the joys and woes of early game situations.

Finally, the gripping turn-based suad-level tactcal battles begin! Load up a troop transport with meat & pea-shooters, fly out, land, equip units, and start ground based search and destroy of the alien mennace! Initially, this is easier said than done. No amror, low level equipment, raw recruits, visibility issues, lack of cover while advancing on hidden enemies, and superior alien tecnology all take their toll. Time managment & scouting are critical to keep soldiers out of hospitals & coffins!
