To clarify install on Vista/7 machines

Installing the game through the gamefly client won't work. You need to head into your documents and find the Gamefy folder and look for the download folder, find the game install and change the compatibility mode to either Windows 2000 or XP. Here is the pathway to get where you need to go:

Start > Documents > Gamefly > downloads > 60007595

I'm not sure that number at the end will be the same for you. In any case, you're looking for a numbered folder containing the "Thief -Deadly Shadows_v1.0.0.1_ddsetup" file.

Before you go double-clicking to start installation, right click on this exe file and select properties. Navigate to the compatibility tab, tick the checkbox for "Run in Compatibility Mode" and select either Windows XP or 2000 from the dropdown. When that is done, click apply then ok. Now you may double click the exe file to begin the install.

After installing, you should be able to play without a problem. I can play it on a Windows 7 64 bit desktop without a problem. Now if only i can get it to run 1920x1080.

P.S. - I would imagine that this trick might work for other games not automatically compatible with current operating systems.

Follow the others notes for install on a laptop. Go to your documents/gamefly folder, install from there, works like a charm. It is a wonderful game that I am definitely keeping around for awhile!

I missed the thief series back in the day. Too busy with Ultima Online. But this game caught me way off-guard with it's ability to still, to this day, be a slam dunk in the stealth category.

Many people who would like this game are players of the Splinter Cell series and the Assassins creed series. Stealth and ingenuity are the driving factors of this game. As long as you can handle the lower end graphics... Which, for all intents and purposes, aren't that bad. I tend to lean towards gameplay over graphics. The story is great, i wouldn't say riveting... but great. The possibilities are endless with Thief: Deadly Shadows.

This game deserves a much better rating that it currently has. Some poeple may give it poor grades because they simply cannot install it. This happens from time to time when trying to use a game, or even program, years and years after its development. Still this game simply sucks you in and doesn't let go. The varieties of kill options and stealth options are endless and the replay value is high.

Why is the replay value high, you ask? Well mainly because your first time through you wont really have the whole grasp of what you CAN do in this game. It's not about knifing or using your bow... It's about outwitting your enemies.

Bottom line is, this game is fantastic and deserves a playthrough regardless of your age or upbringing. This was the birth of a whole new genre: covert espionage. Still a monumental game despite its age and I definitely recommend a playthrough. Don't let the graphics fool you, you'll be engulfed in the game in no time.

One of the best Games I've ever played

Its a different take on a FPS. You must use stealth and shadows. Weapons are a last resort and usually only good to help you escape. Each level can be solved in a variety of ways so no 1 patch is correct although you get 'bonus' points for certain tasks in a mission (i.e. complete it without being seen even once).

The game hold up after all this time also.

I played this when it first came out back in the ninties, then again a few years later. I have not played it through the gamefly client, but this is an EXCELLENT game. absolutely a classic, any serious gamer should give this title at least one playthrough.

Same issue with win7 not working. I do not like having to modify my system nor having to install with modifications. Paying for a service they should provide the detection and the fix for us.

So I ran the instal .exe in compatibility windows 2000 and it installed just fine. It even let me open the game. I got excited until it kept playing the opening sequence over and over and not allowing me to stop it and start the game. It's a good game that I was hoping to play again. Hopefully a solution can be found.

"does not support play on laptop computers"?

posted by PaperTigers76 (ROCKVILLE, MD) Dec 26, 2012

I can't get the game to open, even though my laptop more than meets the system requirements. What does it even mean to "not support play on laptops"? That doesn't make any sense.

Does not support Laptops?

posted by Ankhnefer (LA FAYETTE, GA) Oct 26, 2012

Well, most games that are created and released these days are playable on laptops. And alot more people are starting to just having laptops instead of desktops because you can take the laptop with you whereever you go! So, even though I CAN'T play this game because it doesn't support play on a laptop, I will have to give it 1 star just to lower it's rating some because of it's lack of support.

It Works(windows vista/7) so far...

posted by TPMGM96 (VISTA, CA) Sep 2, 2012

It actually works. Read nl37tgt's review. After u have downloaded do this before install: Start > Documents > Gamefly > downloads > 60007595. Then right click "Thief -Deadly Shadows_v1.0.0.1_ddsetup" and go to "Properties" and to "Compatibility" then "Run this program in compatibility mode for" then select either Windows XP(Service Pack 2) or Windows 2000(I chose this), by default it's set on Windows XP(Special Package 3)

After that u should be able to run it from the t3.exe file normally.

Note: i messed with this for a while before i used these instructions, this only works on the "Thief -Deadly Shadows_v1.0.0.1_ddsetup" and not the t3.exe after install. Also, I haven't tried WindowsXP(SP2) so if that doesn't work, select Windows 2000(after uninstalling and re-downloading ofc)

Child's fix explained

If you run a Windows 7 laptop, (Which most of you do), you need to go to your documents folder, into the gamefly folder and then to downloads. You can find the Thief setup.exe somewhere in there, and then right click it, propertiees, compatibility, and set it to Windows 2000. Apply your settings, then run it and it should install. I don't think you'll be able to run it from the Gameefly client, but it installs just fine.
