I was fully expecting to not like this game. After all, quest grinding is nothing new in this genre and that's what TERA has. However, it's combat is different from any other MMO I've played and somewhere in the starting zone I was startled to realize I was having fun.
I don't mean the prologue though. The prologue is a little tutorial/preview of what your class will be like at level 20 and I frankly didn't care for it because I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. If you like it, great! If you don't, suffer through it to get to the real starting area where you will actually learn what you're supposed to be doing. Trust me, it's worth it.
A couple things will be apparent to you fairly early on. First, the game is gorgeous. Second, this is a quest grind game. Kill x of this mob etc. Third, the combat is different and fun. You don't lock onto your targets in this game. You have a targeting reticule in the middle of your screen, and that's where your attacks will go. Where you stand and where the mob stands are very important. It is quite possible for you to step to the right to avoid a nasty attack and also for the mob to do the same to you. This isn't your typical lock target, button 1, button 2, button 3, repeat, kinda combat. It might take some getting used to, but it is way fun.
In terms of story, I think there is one, maybe? Michael Hogan(gen. tullius, Saul Tigh) voices one of the NPC's, so that's win right there.
The classes are also really well done as well, and I've had some trouble deciding which I'm actually going to make my main character. This leads to one of the problems of TERA. Because it's a quest grind game, if you make another character, you'll being doing the same stuff in the same areas all over again.
Overall, it is lacking in some areas, but I've gotten my money's worth in terms of entertainment and I can see myself spending quite a bit of time in this game. I highly recommend it! Join me on the Frostreac
Coming from World of Warcraft, Rift, and even Aion I found it hard to believe that it would be any different. Friends kept telling us to try it out, that its completely different. Finally I broke down and downloaded the trial, and was very surprised.
The play style is much more interesting and fun that other MMO's. The thing I find to be the most fun is the combat style, not being able to lock onto a target and having to use your skills. Unlike many MMO's where its lock on and fire away, this one lets you move around and dodge harmful attacks. Also the weaponry is awesome, super large weapons for their characters sizes but still very cool. I also like that unlike other MMO's there is no race to class separation. Meaning if I want to be a Slayer for instance, I can be a Slayer on any race and any gender. Making it that much more fun for the player.
The character customization takes it that much farther too! You can customize it with different colors and tones far many more options that that of other games on the market. On top of that so that there is no character that looks the same in this game you can adjust fine details like jaw structure, noses, mouths, and more.
All in all the game is very fun to play and stunningly designed in both characters and world. Its a great buy and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a change from the normal MMO. Just be ready to still have quest grinding, we can't have our cake and eat it too! Aside from that its a whole new ball game for the competitors, and a welcome change to online gamers everywhere!
