I have been playing RTS games for the better part of ten years, so I am no novice when it comes to the genre. So when I say that Sword of the Stars is one of the worst RTS games I have ever played, I honestly mean it.
When I started playing it, it started with the tutorial because all RTS games have their own little quirks when it comes to controls, and that's the best way to figure them out so it doesn't ruin the gameplay when starting campaign mode and finding out that the right and left mouse buttons are reversed from what I'm used to. It was during the tutorial that I found myself scratching my head and wondering just what the heck to do. There are no instructions. The game had me pick a race, insignia, and color scheme, and then threw me right into a mock game. There was no instruction on how to build ships or how to manage the small amount of funds I was given to build my fleet.
The trailer shows these epic looking space battles, and all I found was myself staring at a 2D map of the universe.
I honestly have no idea how this game managed to get such high scores, as shown on the box, because it really doesn't deserve it from what I was able to play, which wasn't anything beyond the small fraction of the tutorial that I could figure out.
If you're looking for a good RTS game, skip this one and find something else.
This game is seriously like the other side of a pool. It's deep, and you'll need to learn to swim very well to be confident in it... But when you learn it's ins and outs, you can do so much more than you could've imagined. Worth the learning curve.
Miserable 1/10 review aside from someone thinking this game is something it's not...this game is solid fun. Deep, engaging, and rewarding if you can make it past the learning curve. Yes, getting a foot in the door can be a pain, but it's not impossible. It's also well worth the effort.
This is not StarCraft, Command & Conquer, or even Homeworld. Sword of the Stars falls into the realm of 4x strategy games like Civilization, Sins of a Solar Empire, or Master of Orion. Don't get me wrong, I love me some straight up RTS games; I'm just warning those looking for that experience. This game is far more massive in scale, and requires a lot more patience...and time.
