This game is NOT the arcade-shooter I expected! I was looking for a cheap gap filler while I decide on my next major game or MMO in which to invest my recreational time. Being ex-Navy, the setting was a plus and since I've always enjoyed blasting things with small and medium caliber weapons, I got it.
Install was easy enough and the game launched first time without a hitch. Beginning with the tutorial, you will quickly realize that there is a lot more to this game than walking tracers on to 109's and punching out torpedoes aimed at slow, fat, freighters!
Kudos to the designers for their attention to detail in re-creating the environment in which the aforementioned blasting must occur! Times of day, weather and sea state are just a few of the minor considerations to engaging targets. Then add in the gun caliber, ammo available speed, range, and course of the target... With all the factors considered, be proud of any kills you get! Being able to control any gun position on the boat is cool as is the Captains chair at the wheel. I have a gripe about some minor LOS problems through the Captain's optics, but it's one minus against a stack of pluses.
My only other negative is that the self-repair ability of each boat and its crew is a bit contrived, but if you lump it in with the myriad of decisions a PT boat skipper had to make during these intense conflicts, it is acceptable.
So, to me, a self-proclaimed military history trivia buff, this is a well designed and executed game. If you want to learn some things about the naval theaters of WWII and experience the real difficulties of being a Gunner in this theater, try this game.
