I would highly recommend that you play Mass Effect 2 before you play this game, as this is a series where choices you have made in the previous games can have a significant impact on the story you experience in this game. ME3 is way better if you play with a save imported from 2.
Now, with that out of the way, we can talk about ME3. It is difficult to overstate how great the story for ME3 really is. There are several points during the story where I had to stop and think about the possible ramifications of my decisions before choosing, and a couple points where the result of my "right" decision was truly painful to watch. The opening cutscene had me hooked almost instantly and the beginning of the end sequence may just be about the most epic thing I have ever seen.
The combat improves upon the groundwork laid down in 2, although if you play in "Narrative" mode, it is super easy, while still being satisfying. The weapons upgrade system is also better than it was in 2 and a lot more customizable to ones preferred playstyle.
If I had to describe in one word the difference between ME3 and the previous games it would be "streamlined". Planet scanning is gone, replaced by a system that can scan multiple planets in a system. The bypass/hack minigame that was in 2 and 1 is gone as well(it was really only fun the first 100 times you did it anyways lol) replaced with a slightly longer player animation.
Side missions unrelated to the main story are pretty much gone as well and the remaining side missions are both fun and important to the main narrative.
Sadly, all of this awesomeness really falls apart at the end. 99% of the game is great, but may be completely ruined by the last 1%. Still, I maintain that this is a fantastic game in a fantastic series and I highly recommend that you get it. (but only if you play ME2 first)
