I was excited to dig into this game (finally buying the 'ultimate' edition). Now 40+ hours into the game I will summarize my experience and thoughts here...
I started as a human noble (excellent use of branching story in the beginning of a game). Overall I think the game is excellent IF... you have the time, patience, and are a little OCD you will get a lot out of it. I like the characters and graphics are descent (better if you download the texture mods). The story is kind of been there done that; however there is a rich history behind the land of Fereldon etc. This is where it bogs me down a bit. The many baground codexes and long diaglogue sequences start to feel like they really are dragging it out too much. The dungeons also seem to reflect this same design... just when you think you are about to break through and reap your reward for exploring and overcoming, bam you find another labyrinth or more difficult obstacle to overcome. Combining these elements with a game that is 'harder' than other BioWare titles and you may loose patience with it.
NOW.... that being said; I went on vacation, returned, breathed deep and tried digging in again and find myself having hours of fun with it. You just may find it is a game, if you enjoy the first 15 hours, that you can bury yourself in for a very long time. So keep that in mind but if you like 'Buldur's Gate' type games etc... you'll likely enjoy this one.
If you are a fan of RPG games and you have not played Dragon Age: Origins then you have never truly experienced what an RPG game is. This is the only game that managed to rank up with Skyrim and Star Wars knights of the old republic. I first purchased this game for the XBOX 360 when it first came out, and I have been addicted to this day! Bioware's magical charm of making you fall in love with your companions is one of the biggest things in this game, not to mention the deep storyline, Tons of side quests and lore that will have drooling for more information. And one of the biggest things that stuck with me was the dark tone of the entire game. No matter where you are and what you are doing everything seems so....Hopeless and raunchy. Like around every corner waits a new horrifying terror. Such as the story of the brood-mother, It is both depressing and shocking, but I wont spoil it.And finally the fact that the story line strongly changes for each race or class you pick. Something only Bioware could pull off. So all in all this game is an underrated epic, an overlooked treasure. Surpassing Skyrim by far. So pick it up! you won't regret it!!
