Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.

Sid is back with a Civ 4. Now if you have never played a Civ before just know its an aquired taste like clams, or dog meat.

Always time consuming Civ 4 follows a turn based strategy, and allows the player to start from literally nothing. Turn your small village of rock thowers into a bursting metropolis filled with wonders, or be a complete douchebag, and watch as your people suffer, and revolt against you.

Play how you want by customizing your map settings. Do you perfer a barren destert, or a frozen tundra. Do you want to conquer the world with the mongol horde or perhaps you want the world to be in awe of your Civs technolgy. Civ 4 is all about perference and choice, and you get to choose everything from how fast the game plays to the age of the world (not really sure why), and everything inbetween.

You can make the game as easy or as difficult as you would like, but higher difficulty levels requires a large amount of micro-management which in turn is EXTREMELY TIME CONSUMING. Lucky you can set many of the options like workers, production, and promotions to auto so at least you can save a couple of hours.

The AI is fairly solid even though at times it seems the game has it in for you. The other leaders populating your world are rarley peaceful, and will attack if they see your weak. On harder difficulties they will even form alliances to try and take you down. Lucky you can do the same. Become friends with other civs and form defensive pacts so you know your never alone, or if your good play them against each other, and watch as the world descends into war, and chaos. Muhaahahh....ha..... moving right along

Overall Civ has always been one of my favorite TBS games because you can play it how you want to play it. If you try it and like it, hurry out and pick up Civ V, and its newest expand Gods and kings.

I've just recently gotten into the Civ franchise, and can safely say that this is a fine installment in the series, as aged as it may be. The graphics aren't great, but work for what its worth, and all the gameplay is there, the only real complaint I have about this game is the learning curve and overall understandablility. You'll need to use the wiki page to understand how half of this stuff works. However, it's a very rich and deep experience, and I advise that everyone at least give it an hour or two before judging it.

I see a lot of people saying that Civ IV is better than V. Well I agree with them 100% while Civ V is a good game Civ IV is just way better in every aspect. I thought that this was definetly the best one in the series. Also everything about this game is quite fun, whether it be voice overs all the way to the controls. Everything gets an A+ in my eyes. Only reason its not a perfect 10 is because their were some minor things i'd change but that's okay. And btw if you're having trouble playing it off of this poorly made UPP then just go and buy it if you are a fan. It's a good game and you won't regret it!

I've been a huge CIV fan since day one and I wasn't disappointed with this version. Loved the graphics and there wasn't much delay in progress. However... its easy to cheat if one was so inclined. (not that I used the codes, no of course not) If you want a game that features consequences of your playing actions, this one will satisfy your curiosity.

That being said, I liked it. Lots.

Okay so first of all I used to have this game and it is an amazing game in my opinion. The problem is all the files required to play this are not in the download. I get a error message stating "The program can"t start because boost_python-vc71-mt-1_32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I do not know if anyone else has had this problem, if you have, how do you fix it? (I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times.)

Civilization has always been one of the great turn based strategy games. Unless you have complete misconceptions (like mike_r_cab) and don't really have a taste for games are the standard bearer games for the turn based strategy genre, then this is a must play.

Hi. I have this game and I love playing it, though I always lose. But the important thing is having fun, right? So I'm not mad at myself if I lose. Everyone has their days, right? I want to congratulate 2K Games on behalf of all fans of this game, they've done a great job on this game. Really, really good job guys!

With all the hype this one gets and the fact that it's been the top game on GF UPP for a while now, I thought I would give it a shot. Bad move. I expected something similar to Command and Conquer, Black and White, Age of Empires, or Empire Earth, and got instead a Turn based game. The tutorial is Heavy Handed, and the entire look of the thing is borrowed from Empire Earth. I cannot say anything good about it really, except that it ran on my machine, and if I never had any experience with RTS games before, it would probably be okay. But, I do have experience with Real Time Strategy games, and held up against the fast paced structure of those games, I can think of no other game as nap-inducing as this one. You have a choice in games on Gamefly. Pick something else. Even Farmville, God help us, is more exciting than this.

OK so compared to civ 5 this is better, but for some reason on this version the enemys archers will cause you more damage then your modern tanks will do to them, thats just an example of the way combat is, ive played this game before from walmart and it wasnt like this so i dunno.

Combat Is Terrible

I have played one other Civilization game seems reletiveley the same. The combat has always seemed a little off to me (pikemen destroying airplanes being one of the things that stuck out) but you could still win regularly. Though in this game attacking cities is impossible without massive ammount of troops and effort, in other games this has been fixed with combining 3 units into an army but in this game combat is not an option for winning to me. Over all everything other than combat is fine but if you want to fight you must have units being put near the city every turn.

Decent game but combat is BROKEN

posted by Polyneye (GASTON, SC) Mar 25, 2013

The game plays mostly like any other civ game I've ever played. Been a fan since the first installment. However in this version combat seems to be just slightly broken. Can someone explain to me how archers defending a city can destroy 3 tanks before 5 archers die? Something doesn't seem quite right about that. Other than the complete lack of realism in combat I'd recommend this game to anyone.

Horrible game. Fun until you get past around the second era and everyone just declares war on you. dont waste your time people. I mean if you have no life and devote 92% of your life to gaming go for it but if youre just lookin to have fun dominating the world in a couple hours you're gonna be disappointed

There is a lot of options on how the map is setup. There is a lot of diplomatic options, but it really is too easy for the diplomatic relations between factions, just allways say yes and they are happy. If you deny the NPC's you'll end up with all the factions attacking you in no time.

Elitist gameplay and boring

There is a reason this is 'free' for it is a very boring simulation.

Its amazing how the civ for SNES without the celebrity endorsements, bells and whistles, and fancy graphics managed to maintain my interest for hours.

This is nothing more than flash and flimflam. The hide and seek interface makes me aggrivated. And NO I'm not impressed by Leanord Nemoy.

Despites all the flashy graphics it still manages to be dull. If I hear another hawk scream every 5 seconds that's not ambiance its torture. It's like my entire civilization is watching "The Room."

I uninstalled it just now.

Brilliant Game! NOT AN RTS!!!

This game is among the more unique Turn-Based-Strategy games, because of it's unique twist on history. It has a decent mod community, though I don't know if they work on the GF version. I own the Gold Edition, so I didn't DL it. Same game, mostly, just Gold has addon content. Despite the complexity of the game, the UI makes getting things done simple. It's slow paced, being turn-based, so no frantic micromanaging or missing economic details due to a battle. Need a fresh soda? no need to pause it! the game only progresses when you, yourself, progress it. There are countless historic quotes as well, and an option to use your own custom music. Just go to options and choose a folder full of MP3s on your hard drive, or other storage medium. (Don't know if removable DVDs/CDs work...) The game is DX9 with only basic hardware requirements. few rigs are weaker than the 1.2 ghz Pentium IV needed, and they should, but don't, ALL have 256mb ram. (The minimum required for the old Win2000. You need 512MB for WinXP. don't have it? get a new rig. I'd be suprised if you're reading this with less than 256mb.) A 64mb DX9 card is not unusual even in old WinXP rigs. Most PCs exceed the recommendation of 1.8ghz Pentium IV or AMD Athalon, 512MB RAM, 1.7GB storage drive (Hard Disk? Solid State? Your call.), 128MB DX9 video card, and, should you like it enough to buy a physical copy, a 4X CDROM drive. You need a DVD drive for the Gold edition. Remember that this game is time consuming and slow paced, so it's not for speed junkies, and is very complex, so it's not recommended for idiots, rednecks, or republicans. :) Also, the mods, though numerous, congregate mostly on forums, rather than dedicated download sites like Filefront or Nexus Mods. Plus, you can only run one major mod at a time. Custom maps, I believe, are seperate from mods in that regard. Brilliant, and enthralling, a MUST for a lazy, but intelligent, gamer. 9 out of 10. Why? Loading saves is a ridiculous hassle sometimes....
