Oh the controls...

If I've ever played a game so marred by such a fundamental weakness, it would be with no hesitation that I would say The Witcher 2.

+On the positive, the voice acting and dialogue choices are fairly good, similar but not nearly as obvious paragon/renegade dialogue choices in the Mass Effect series. The voice acting is genuine and greatly enhances the depth of characters met, including the protagonist himself.

-On the negative, the combat system feels clunky, cumbersome and overall very dated by contemporary gaming standards. The lock-on system is unnecessarily difficult, adding as a distraction during the heat of battle.

-What's worse is that the controls themselves are wonky and often ignores input altogether. There were many times that it would be unresponsive to my button pressing.

For all of the praising that this game has received, I'm surprised that I am in limited company in terms of scrutinizing this game and feeling as dissatisfied as I do.

It's a real shame that the game was completely unplayable for me before I could even get through the second part of the PROLOGUE, to put 100+ hours into this game would be beyond masochistic.

Try it out, rent it, but be warned that you may need to buy an extra controller when you throw hulk-smash your others through a wall or two.

Great game! Should do more with potions, enhancements, and crafting. I played the whole game without doing very much of those. Should be able to create lots of cool weapons. Should also include bows or crossbows. That would be pretty sweet. Just some thoughts for the Witcher 3! (:

Don't quite get the hype

Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful looking game. But combat and basic controls can get cluttered and confusing quickly.Navigating the game world also suffers from this issue as well.

I get that combat needs to be challenging, but it should be challenging from a tactical standpoint, and not from the combinations of buttons and menus one has to go through to do that. A game like Skyrim never made me feel like that - it flowed a lot better then this game in terms of basic controls and combat mechanics.

The lack of a "fast-travel" mechanism is exceddingly annoying as well. In a game like this, I don't want to see the world over and over unless I want to - I want to get to the meat of the game quickly.

Besides being "pretty", it does have a semi-coherent main story line going for it. But the other issues I've covered dampen my enthusiasm for it some. I wouldn't likely buy it, but if you have more patience with the game's mechanics, then it might be worth a rental.
