We see the Call of Dutys and Battlefields try so hard to make a good story that is action packed and gritty. They fail so many times, don't get me wrong some are amazing but more often then not they fail. Well my good people Spec Ops: The Line says" Let me show you how this is done".
This game story starts out all bland and vanilla, it clearly borrows from Apocalypse Now except in desert and not jungle. But you follow Captain Walker who is the leader of Delta squad investigating what happened in Dubai. Things turn sour fast and the game just goes bananas from there. Not super crazy but it shows a side of our gun toting hero we never see to often in video games. This is very much a character driven story with some good set pieces. You make decisions, but they ultimately don't matter in the overall story ark. The ending to this game is so powerful and just gives you a jaw dropping experience it is a must see.
The gameplay is your typical third person cover based shooter. Cover-based is the key because if you are out of cover for even a second, YOU WILL DIE. They have a poor squad mechanic that I rarely used because your squad is pretty useless for the most part. The most interesting thing they do is having the sand be a weapon. Certain moments in the game the sand can be used to kill a group of enemies or at least subdue them.
Overall the game is a blast, as long as you don't mind your shooters to be dark and gritty then this is for you. If you are tired of the bland uninspired stories then this game is for you. I seriously have hardly anything but the slow beginning to knock on this game it is that good.
