Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City - Reviewed

On March 20th, I woke up excited at the prospect of getting my hands on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. I began skimming the net for reviews. To my dismay, Game Informer had given it a 6 out of 10, and IGN worse than that, with a staggering 4 out of 10! They claimed that the campaign was dull. From the brevity of it, to the poor environments, and lackluster AI (both friendly and enemy) the game sounded like a disaster. Wanting more points of view, I hopped on JustIn tv and began watching a live feed. I asked around the chat room if anyone else had played it and enjoyed their experience. It seemed pretty unanimous that it was, in fact, an enjoyable title. The AI on the feed did not seem as stupid as the reviews had claimed, so I decided I would purchase it for myself.

My experience - Single player

The biggest problem with the campaign, is that it's boring. I can't quite put my finger on what makes it this way, but not many games make me feel less compelled to finish it like this one does. I have yet to see it all the way through. Perhaps it is because the environments are as dull as the reviews claim them to be. Now that I think about it, the environments are dull, because I didn't really notice them. I might as well have been playing on a black screen with zombies on it. Don't expect much from the story either. The dialogue is cheesy and I found myself skipping the cinematic scenes altogether. Whatever the case may be, I get bored and hop on Battlefield 3 after 30 minutes of play.

When I do manage to fix my attention at the task at hand, I began to notice some critical design flaws. Now, I don't know if this happened to anyone else, but the game does a bad job of directing players towards their next objective. Being a game that is very linear, this would seem almost impossible. However, I would often have to rely on other players to find my way on to the next area. Also, the

Honestly am enjoying this slightly better than RE5, seeing as I don't really count RE5 as survival horror. When I first heard about this game I thought it was going to be stupid. I started playing and I find myself enjoying it and being a big fan of the old RE. I liked revisiting the old areas and seeing the heros from the enemy point of view. AI is very bad. Should only play with other friends. I like the graphics. Story isn't great but its not bad either. Def worth renting!

First off, most of the problems that people have been complaining about in here, I have not experienced. I found a solid 3rd person shooter, while not as good as say uncharted or Gears of War, but solid enough to make the game enjoyable.

The game is a solid 3rd person shooter, it is what you would expect if someone said it was a 3rd person shooter, you can run, shoot, throw grenades, take cover so on and so forth. The only thing that I thought was weird was the inability to jump over cover. Its not a big complaint, but it is in almost every 3rd person shooter now so its just weird not having it. Killing stuff is great, nice gore and what not. As for the random damage thing, the only enemy that I really saw this happening was the lickers, seriously you could unload on one and sometimes, not all the time, it would absorb them like a sponge. AI is not bad either, well not horrible I should say. AI players will shoot, stab, and follow you. They will randomly pick up items though. Whether they need them or not, it seems they will just ignore items for the most part. Also, one of the players, his name is like Beltran or something, he likes to throw grenades, randomly, when there are no enemies. Enemy AI gets the job done. AI soldiers will hide behind cover, move from cover to cover, blind fire, etc. Zombies are, well zombies. If you were expecting them to have great AI, well then you have never seen most zombie movies. All other enemies attack you but they are not continually focused on you. They will attack your team or in some cases the enemy soldiers as well. I came across a part where two soldiers were shooting zombies in a hall, I killed one of the soldiers and the other one ended up getting overwhelmed by the zombies. It was a nice touch in my opinion.

Sound is good, nice effects, music is ok but most of the time you wont notice it.

Graphics are great, just dark since it takes place at night.

Overall great game, fun and worth a try.
