This game was an absolute blast. I do have some complaints, but the overall feeling of the game is truly as though you were playing a movie.
I've seen some negative comparisons in reference to other Rockstar IPs such as Red Dead and GTA which is slightly puzzling. This was never billed as a sand-box game nor as one built for free roam side questing. It's main idea is playing through the life of a cop in the 1940s noire movie-style. And, as such, if you are looking to rent this title, you need to bare this in mind. As many other reviewers have mentioned the graphic quality is down right scary. To be able to discern lie from truth, facial expression has been painstakingly modeled and skinned. The game is slightly open-ended in that different decisions will open or close certain doors of opportunity during cases, but there is a "right" way for each mission sadly (a little disappointing).
I only have two major complaints for this game. One, is the AI of your fellow drivers... When your siren is on, everyone begins pulling towards the right-most lane even if that's the lane you're in already due to it being the only one open. Also, even though they see a car coming at them at around 50-60mph most cars crossing intersections (especially without a siren on) will literally stop in the middle of the intersection instead of getting out of the way. Secondly, some choices during interrogation were baffling to me. Sometimes the correct choice would be "doubt" when I was sure that a piece of evidence I had was more than sufficient to call someone on a lie. Then, other times my "doubts" would actually be "lies" even though to me the evidence used to back the accusations had nothing to do with said allegations. Lastly, I'd like to mention that the gunfights were pretty boring and fairly repetitive. That's less a complaint and more just a heads up.
All in all, this is a great game. It's certainly not for everyone, but for worth a play even if just for the great story.
Above average game. Loved the 40's LA cityscape. Two biggest drawbacks from my view were the fact that after awhile the story actions become boring and the lack of true open world interaction. Replay vale is moderate at best
