If bioshock and gears of war had a baby...

If Gears of war, bioshock, and half life 2 had a baby, this is what you'd get. Being a third person shooter it incorporates a cover system and control scheme much like gears of war, but has a weapon scheme not unlike bioshock's plasmids (your glaive/guns)

Much of the single player movement looks like the clone of gears of war right down to the roadie run. The only exception is it's missing the coolest features of the duck and cover system. (No blind fire, you cant roadie run into cover, and half the time it's hard to tell if you're truely in cover or not) One other cool feature is the ability to cut off heads and arms with the glaive and you also get to do finishing moves to other players. (Not unlike chainsawing the heck out of someone in gears)

Much like bioshock though, you're running around in a world with two types of weapons, one is your guns, the other is your body, and both are controlled by different buttons. The only downfall to the "your weapon is your body" thing is you only get a few abilities revolving around the glaive. No electroshock, no incinerate, no insect swarm... You really only get to throw it and have it do cool stuff in the air. it's kind of like a really dumbed down gravity gun that cant really pick stuff up, just punt...

Single player campaign and story line truely take on a characteristic of it's own. The art style is also one that's rather amazing. The one thing I dont like is I feel too breakable. I'm constantly on the edge of dying just because I wanna feel more invincible than I am. Facing a whole squad of soldiers with just a blade can be somewhat difficult at times...

Even with the few drawbacks in this game, it's definately more invisionary than just a simple run and gun shooter. The few abilities that you get with the glaive are more than enough and the similarity to other popular games takes some of the best control/gameplay schemes from some of the best games. Definately a game to rent, if not buy...

Dark Sector does very little poorly, but nothing is particularly outstanding. The glaive is cool, but it gets old, and without it, this game is Gears of War with scrawnier arms. It feels like very little creativity was put into this game, though it is technically solid and the gameplay runs smoothly, it is very repetitive and redundant. The glaive can pick up elements like fire, ice and electricity, and these elements along with guiding it around barriers are used in puzzles ad nauseam.
Besides Gears of War, Dark Sector reminds of The Darkness. It fumbles through the exact same theme of an evil growing out of your guy that makes him fight better. The glaive mechanics are not even that different from The Darkness' demon arms. Both of these had hackneyed, lame plots and dialogue that took themselves way too seriously. Also the multiplayer is about as good as the Darkness, you'll be back to Call of Duty and Rainbow 6 after a few games.
After that malignant rant, this game does deserve a 7, the graphics are top notch, the gameplay is solid, and there is a good amount of challenge. It's not a bad game, just a really unoriginal one. Nothing will make you hate the game, nothing will blow you away. It's just a shame that with such good technical and programming work, the creativity was mailed in aside from the glaive.

I thought this game was pretty awesome! It looked amazing in HD. The sound was really good, especially the glaive flying through the air, then tearing some guys arm off! The game was paced very well I thought, It gives you a lot of your core skills your gonna need for the whole game fairly quick, then through out the game you'll obtain the the really cool and brutal techniques that are just icing on the cake! There is very little I can say about it that was bad. Only that it could have been more, in as far as story, and the overall "wow" factor of the game. You know, when you're playing something and it totally immerses you in the game then something spectacular happens and you have to stop for a second and are like, "Wow, Did that just happen?" That and the multiplayer was not that good, it just seemed unpolished, like it was a last minute addition the developers threw in there just because. I started playing it just to get the achievements but didn't even get that far and decided it wasn't worth it. I think there were others who shared my feelings because there were never many people online to start a game. So, single player is definitely the way to go on this one. If want about 8 to 10 hours of good dismembering fun, this game has got it down tight!
