Garbage controls. Got to the part where you race your brother and was so fed up with the controls that I don't even want to play anymore. I never got completely fed up with a game's controls 15 minutes in for over 30 years. Horrible.
The controls for this game are beyond frustrating to the point of neutering you as a player. The game gives you a freeform sandbox environment and then makes every action you take linear, railroaded, overly complicated, and technical. My hands literally cramped trying to win a race. A race which I lost and had to restart repeatedly due to my avatar making abrupt direction changes on narrow rooftops and never jumping in the direction I was indicating. Every time I tried to grab an enemy in a "protect the shmuck who can't fight his own battles" quest, I would instead put away my weapon and pick up some trash on the ground, which takes a ridiculously long time to do, usually cost my combat-challenged ward precious life, and let my enemy get in a solid, undefended combo. The frustrations don't end there. If you need to make a jump, line it up perfectly or you will fall to your doom in new, spectacular, and physically impossible ways. And don't even get me started on clipping. The environment clearly isn't modeled very well because I found myself constantly stuck in strange poses hovering in the air. I ended up on top of something when I should have impacted on it and landed below it. The targeting system never seems to lock on to the enemy you're facing, and usually ends up making you assassinate nearby civilians or locking on to the doctor standing in the middle of the legion of guards directly in front of you. Worse still, the storyline is contrived, and the game tries to make you care about a family who gets so little screen time that you barely even know them. And don't get me started on the ridiculously long tutorial phase of the story, and the amount of time it takes to even get your first lethal weapon. The protagonist's motivation starts out hazy, and I found myself blindly following the map markers and hoping for the best. It tries, but this is not a game I would ever want to start again. In fact, I refuse to ever play anything else in this series.
